Chaos Rising is the Mega Greninja set, and the chase doesn't stop at the top

Chaos Rising came out May 22, and if you've opened a pack, you already know the story: it's the Mega Greninja set. Code ME04, 86 cards in the regular run, 36 secret rares stacked above it. I've got a pile of it scanned into the system, so here's the chase list the way I'd hunt it, and the cards I'm quietly pulling aside.

The Greninja ladder, top to bottom

Mega Greninja ex shows up four times, and every rung is a different kind of lottery ticket. #022 is the Double Rare, the one you'll actually pull. #100 is the Ultra Rare. #116 is the Special Illustration Rare. And #122/086, the gold Mega Hyper Rare, closes out the set. The SIR and the Mega Hyper Rare are the two biggest cards in the expansion, full stop. Hit either one and that pack stopped being a flip.

The SIRs that aren't Greninja

The Special Illustration Rare slot runs #116 through #121: Greninja, then Mega Floette ex, Mega Dragalge ex, Cinccino ex, and two trainers, AZ's Tranquility and Roxie's Performance. I'd watch the trainers. Trainer SIRs this era have a habit of sitting cheap for a few months and then not being cheap.

Binder math: 86 base + 76 reverse holos (everything except the 10 ex cards) + 36 secrets = a 198-card master set, 22 nine-pocket pages. The eleven Illustration Rares (#087-097) are where a master set gets expensive in a hurry. Three of them are Ampharos (#090), Xerneas (#091) and Crobat (#093), and I'll get to why that matters.

What's actually in my pile

Here's where I stop talking about other people's pulls. The Chaos Rising batch in CardStrike is 90 cards deep, scanned front and back and waiting on pricing. It's the base run, not the hit pile: nothing in there is above a Rare, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

But look at the holo rares. I've got six holo Chesnaught (#007), four holo Delphox (#013), three each of Keldeo (#019), Ampharos (#029), Crobat (#051) and Trevenant (#039), plus a pair of Xerneas (#042). Ampharos, Xerneas and Crobat are the same Pokémon that got Illustration Rare art in the secret run. If you're building the Illustration Rare set and want the matching base card next to it in the binder, that's the pairing I'd go after.

Every one of those cards will light up number by number on the Chaos Rising checklist page as it gets priced and listed. That page is the real-inventory version, the cards I own and not a scraped list.

Same deal as always: whatever sells pays for the next box. The Greninja SIR, if one ever turns up here, is not going on a listing.
